The Tibetan word bardo (Tib. བར་དོ་) means ‘interval’ or ‘intermediate state’. Generally, it is used to designate the intermediate state between death and the next life, although in fact such intermediate states can be said to occur continuously.
The Tibetan teachings on the intermediate state offer a holistic vision of existence encompassing both life and death. According to this understanding, the various situations making up existence are as many intervals or junctures that offer a heightened opportunity to attain enlightenment. These intervals are usually presented either according to a fourfold or a sixfold classification.
