“The Brightly Shining Sun” is Patrul Rinpoche’s (1808-1887) commentary on the 11th century classic “The Way of the Bodhisattva” (Bodhicaryavatara) by the great Indian master Shantideva. Patrul Rinpoche, himself an emanation of Shantideva, offers a very concise and practical step-by-step guide to meditating on the Bodhicaryavatara as a manual for training the mind in compassion (Tib. lojong), thus freeing ourselves from the bondage of self-grasping and self-cherishing that are at the root of all our suffering.
