When we engage in a spiritual discipline such as the Buddhist path, we do so on a long-term basis, because we recognize that these teachings are valuable both for ourselves and others. Reflecting on the four thoughts – the preciousness of our human life, the reality of impermanence, the ineluctable law of cause and effect, and the unsatisfactoriness of going round in circles – helps us to sustain an abiding interest in the teachings, to stay focused and to distinguish what is trivial from what is essential.

Patrul Rinpoche, Words of my Perfect Teacher
